A new paradigm shift is going to be seen in the Primary Schools of West Bengal. In one hand the colleges are reeling under a negative impact of College Level Democratic Elections (read politics), on another hand initiatives are taken in different primary schools to form "Sishu Samsad" (or Parliament of Children) to encourage the students to take various responsibilities in the format of the Parliamentary system of our country. Sishu Samsad comprises of different Ministers like Food Minister, Games and Cultural Minister, Education and Environment Minister, etc. All the ministers are working under a Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is nominated by the teachers of that school but other ministers are elected by the children. Under each ministry there will be permanent Samiti. Each Samiti consists of five members. In co-ed schools girls and boys are given equal representation. The ministers are usually elected from class three and four. Under Sarva Siksha Mission the teachers are trained to facilitate the process.
The functions:
The education systems in India and specially in West Bengal had undergone a number of experiments in recent past. Change of syllabus, change of books, change of academic calendar, change of teaching methodologies, change of evaluation pattern, change of question paper format, and many more that I am not acquainted with. But the only thing I can say that our children are not enjoying the lessons or the system. Rhyme is lost, learning from experience is lost, enjoyment in playing is lost - the things those are prevailing are competition, rote learning and omnipresent examination.
Among many futile exercises of our present education system, Sishu Samsad, I believe, is a mature one and instituted in the right direction. The teachers, parents, guardians, educationists, department of education and above all the students should co-operate to make this initiative a successful one.
The functions:
- To acquaint the children with team work
- To help the workers those who are serving midday meals
- To keep the school and its environment clean
- To motivate their own family members and neighbours to change their habit of using toilets.
- To teach the students how parliamentary democracy works.
